Weather

Maritime 'Wet Coast' climate — enormous snowfall but a low, sometimes-wet 2,200 ft village. Jan coldest, village highs ~28–30°F, and it can RAIN at village level mid-winter while it snows up high; snow is far more reliable on the upper mountain. Summers warm & drier, Jul–Aug highs ~78–80°F. Highs 29–80°F. Rain: moderate-high at village level in winter (maritime rain when the freezing level rises above town); drier warm summers.

Getting there & entry

YVR (Vancouver Int'l) — Whistler has no airport — nonstop (Broad — YVR is a major hub (118 nonstop destinations). Dense US West-Coast service (Seattle ~1h, SF, LA, Las Vegas, Denver, Chicago, Newark/NYC, Dallas, Hawaii). Best group-convergence of the international set — a group scattered across US cities can mostly fly direct to YVR.)

Entry (US): Canada — valid passport for air travel; US citizens are EXEMPT from the eTA (US permanent residents are not)

Feels pricey in absolute terms (Vail-owned mega-resort, costly lift tickets/food) but the favorable CAD (~0.72 USD) meaningfully softens it for US visitors — everything's priced in Canadian dollars. Airfare cheap from the West Coast, pricier East/Midwest.

Snow: Very high volume, wetter quality — one of North America's snowiest resorts (Dec alone ~89in), dependable Dec–Jan base and a ~200-day season. But it's maritime: the 2,200 ft village can rain mid-winter while it snows up high, so snow is far more reliable on the upper mountain than at the base. Summer glacier skiing (Horstman) ended indefinitely in 2024/25.

excellent — Whistler Village is a pedestrian-only, car-free stroll between lodging, lifts & dining (a genuine plus); paved & fairly flat but snowy/icy in winter · stroller/wheelchair: village is accessible & walkable; winter snow/ice and some grade changes add friction

tap water: safe — among the safest anywhere (glacier-fed); minor caveat that soft water can leach lead/copper from old plumbing in some older buildings · altitude risk: very low — base ~2,200 ft, summits ~7,160–7,347 ft; little to no altitude sickness (a real advantage over Colorado) · uv heat: high on snow — sunglasses/sunscreen · water safety: don't drink untreated wild glacier/stream water (tap is treated & safe); cold alpine lakes
