Tuscany
Tuscany (Florence, Chianti, Siena, Val d'Orcia)
The postcard of Italy — Renaissance Florence, cypress-lined Chianti hills and hilltop wine towns, at its golden best in late spring and the September–October grape harvest, and a region where a rental car is non-negotiable.
The full sheet
lodging $$$ · airfare $$- Vendemmia (grape harvest) late Aug–mid Oct (peak September; village wine sagre all month)the magic season — golden vines, harvest festivals and new wine; wineries are also busy working, so book tastings/tours ahead
- Ferragosto & the August shutdown Aug 15 + the surrounding 1–2 weeksthe honest worst window for the countryside — many family restaurants and shops close for ferie, the coast is jammed, and it's peak heat; cities feel emptied
- Palio di Siena Jul 2 & Aug 16the famous bareback horse race — Siena is packed and lodging scarce/expensive on and around those two dates
- Olive harvest late Oct–Novnew olive oil (olio nuovo) season — a quieter, cheaper reason to visit the shoulder
- Easter / Scoppio del Carro movable (Easter Sunday, Florence)Florence's 'explosion of the cart'; Easter week bumps crowds and prices
Best overall
Late Apr–Jun & Sep–Oct — warm, long light, vineyards green or gold; September adds the harvest (vendemmia)
Shoulder
Late Mar–Apr & Oct — mild, lighter, better villa rates (Oct is harvest tail + olive season)
Peak
May–Sep (busiest, priciest); Aug is hot AND hollowed out by Italian holidays
Weather
July–Aug daytime HIGHS ~90°F/32°C, dry and strong-sunned. January coldest ~50°F/10°C highs with some rain and grey. Spring and fall are idyllic (60s–70s°F). Summer is dry; the wettest stretch is Oct–Nov. Highs 50–91°F. Rain: low in summer; wettest Oct–Nov.
