The crossing is not a season, it is an event — the herd hits the Mara banks from late July and is gone by mid-September. A handful of Kogatende tents still show late-August 2026 gaps, and the 2027 peak fortnights sell out a full year ahead; either way the decision is a now decision, and Amex points move to Qatar Avios for the JRO flight.

Arusha · 1 night

Plantation lodge on the city's green edge, not a downtown hotel: Arusha Coffee Lodge (Elewana) sits inside a working coffee estate five minutes from the airstrip, or trade it for the quieter riverside garden cottages of Rivertrees Country Inn at Usa River.

Tarangire National Park · 2 nights

Classic canvas in the park's quiet southern reaches: Oliver's Camp (Asilia) is the walking-safari and night-drive specialist far from the day-tripper loop, or Sanctuary Swala under its own acacia grove where elephants walk through camp.

Ngorongoro Crater · 2 nights

Sleep on the rim so you own the first hour of the crater: Entamanu Ngorongoro (Nomad) on the quiet northwest lip or the operatic, crystal-and-banana-leaf Ngorongoro Crater Lodge (andBeyond); the softer-priced classic is Gibb's Farm in the Karatu coffee hills, 40 minutes below the rim.

Seronera (Central Serengeti) · 2 nights

Dunia Camp (Asilia) — the all-women-run tented camp tucked under the Moru Kopjes — is the character pick; Serengeti Serena Safari Lodge is the solid stone-built hilltop fallback when canvas sells out, which in August it does.

Kogatende (Mara River) · 3 nights

Mobile and semi-permanent camps that exist because the herd does: Nomad's Serengeti Safari Camp — the original migration-following mobile, canvas and lamplight — or Asilia's Sayari Camp ten minutes from the crossing points with an actual pool; Lamai Serengeti sits in the kopjes above the Wedge.

The treasury

$26,000–$42,000 for two, all-in, in the Aug–mid-Sep crossing window: quality tented camps run $700–1,500 pp/night full-board with game drives, park and crater fees add roughly $1,500 pp across the 10 days, the balloon is ~$600 pp, bush flights ~$400 pp, and US round-trip economy airfare $1,500–2,200 pp. Trading Crater Lodge-tier rooms for the Gibb's Farm tier trims about $6,000 without touching the wildlife.

Straight talk

A crossing is a probability, not a booking. Herds can mass on the Mara River bank for two days and simply wander off; three nights at Kogatende is the minimum that makes the odds respectable, and adding a fourth is the single best upgrade this itinerary can take.
Crater floor time is rationed: the Ngorongoro Crater service fee (~$295 per vehicle) buys one descent capped at six hours, and the 6 a.m. queue at Lodoare Gate is real — a rim-side lodge exists so your Cruiser is in that line, not driving up from Karatu.
Bush carriers (Coastal Aviation, Auric Air) enforce 15 kg per person in soft-sided duffels — hard shells get refused at the airstrip scale, so pack for the Cessna from home, not from Arusha.
The balloon with Serengeti Balloon Safaris is ~$600 pp, sells out weeks ahead in August, and scrubs for wind with no guaranteed rebooking — fly it on your first Seronera morning so the second morning is the fallback slot.

With a small one (○○○ leave the baby home): Most Mara-area tented camps set minimum ages of 6–12, and eight-hour game drives break toddlers and parents alike — this is the one you take while the grandparents babysit.
