The Milford Road closes for slips and avalanche control even in summer — check the NZTA road-status page the night before, fuel up in Te Anau (no petrol for 120 km), leave by 7am to beat the coach convoy through the Homer Tunnel traffic lights, and pack serious sandfly repellent for the foreshore.
February is peak-shoulder: Te Waonui Forest Retreat, Eichardt's Private Hotel and midday Milford cruises sell out 3–6 months ahead, and the one-way Christchurch-to-Queenstown car hire carries a NZ$300+ relocation fee — lock the Queenstown Airport drop-off when you book the pickup.
