The treasury

$8,000–11,000 for two — roughly $2,200–3,000 transatlantic economy airfare, $600–1,000 in Widerøe/SAS intra-Norway hops, $2,000–2,400 lodging (rorbuer run $250–400/night in season), $400–500 rental car for 4 days, $1,300–1,700 in guided activities (dog sled, two aurora chases, sauna, RIB safari), and Norway-priced food at ~$180/day for a couple

The pitch's Aeroplan/United+SAS routing is stale — SAS left Star Alliance for SkyTeam in September 2024. The clean play now: transfer Amex MR 1:1 to Air France/KLM Flying Blue and book Austin–Amsterdam–Oslo–Tromsø as one award (KLM + SAS SkyTeam segments; ~35–50k economy or 70–90k business one-way pp, and Flying Blue runs monthly Promo Rewards to Scandinavia). For hotels, transfer Chase UR 1:1 to Marriott Bonvoy for the Moxy Tromsø (~20–30k/night); the Lofoten rorbuer are all independents with no points program — pay cash or burn UR through the Chase portal at 1.25–1.5c/pt. Book Widerøe legs with cash; they're cheap and award space is effectively nonexistent.

Straight talk

The aurora is probabilistic, not scheduled — Tromsø averages more cloud than Lofoten's outer islands, so treat the 3 Tromsø nights as two swings at it and book chase operators like Wandering Owl or Chasing Lights who drive 2-3 hours to clear sky rather than fixed-camp outfits; keep daytime plans light after chase nights that end at 2am
February weather runs the show: Widerøe Dash 8s into Svolvær and out of Leknes do cancel in storms, and the E10 closes in bad blows — build a buffer day before your transatlantic flight home and don't book the last possible connection; the rental car will have studded tires but you still need to be genuinely comfortable driving on packed snow in the dark
Book 4-6 months out: sea-view cabins at Eliassen Rorbuer for late Feb–early Mar sell out first among photographers, and blue-hour dog-sled slots at Tromsø Villmarkssenter go early; also note Reinebringen's stone stairway is icy and effectively closed in winter — you admire the pyramid from the bridge, you don't climb it
Timing fine print: the orca and humpback safaris out of Tromsø/Skjervøy wrap up by late January, so don't expect whales; and the cod racks fill progressively through February–March — travel in the Feb 20–Mar 10 window and the racks at Reine will be hanging heavy, but come Feb 1 and many still stand empty

With a small one (●○○ brave parents only): Honest version: aurora chasing means keeping a small child up past 11pm at -10°C. It works if one parent trades off nights and you book a cabin with big north-facing windows so the sky comes to you — but this trip is kinder as a grown-ups' escape.
