Canal-house charm has a cost: places like Pulitzer Amsterdam occupy 17th-century buildings and many Dutch boutiques have steep stairs and no lift — traveling with a pram, confirm a lift or ground-floor room at booking, not at check-in.
The Alkmaar Cheese Market runs Friday mornings only, starting around the last Friday of March — an early-window trip can miss the season entirely, so check the market calendar before promising the cheese porters.
