Straight talk

Christkindlmarkt season is both the draw and the crowd: Old Town Square in Prague and Vienna's Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt are shoulder-to-shoulder after 4pm on weekends — do markets on weekday evenings and save weekend mornings for near-empty museums.
Vienna's December music calendar sells out 2–3 months ahead — book the Wiener Staatsoper and Musikverein by September; day-of standing room at the opera is the fallback, not the plan.
ÖBB Sparschiene fares (from ~€15–25) open about 6 months out and December Railjets genuinely fill — buy tickets with seat reservations as soon as dates are firm.
Expect 4pm darkness and temperatures straddling freezing — icy cobbles in Prague and on Buda's Castle Hill demand real boots — and mind Sunday closures: the Naschmarkt and Budapest's Great Market Hall both go dark on Sundays (the market hall also closes at 3pm Saturdays).

With a small one (●●● made for little ones): Trams, palace gardens, Christmas-market carousels, and the world's oldest zoo at Schönbrunn — though Prague's cobbles will fight your stroller every meter, and every café will hand you a high chair anyway.
