Simple mining-town inn with fireplaces — Hotel Don Bruno is the old reliable in town; or trade altitude for gardens at Rancho San Cayetano 40 minutes downhill outside Zitácuaro, the best food and beds in the monarch region.

Colonial palace hotel inside the UNESCO centro — Hotel de la Soledad, an ex-convent with a bougainvillea courtyard a block off the plaza, or the sleeker Cantera Diez Hotel Boutique facing the cathedral.

The treasury

This trip barely dents a points balance, which is its charm. Everything west of Toluca is pesos-and-cash territory — the big UR stash stays banked for the next long-haul.

Straight talk

The lift-off is weather-gated: monarchs only fly when midday air clears ~13°C, so an overcast or cold day means silent gray clusters. That is exactly why this plan holds two sanctuary days — Santuario El Rosario plus Santuario Sierra Chincua — never build a single-shot visit.
February weekends at El Rosario are mobbed with domestic day-trippers; sequence the trip so sanctuary days land Tuesday–Thursday. Same lead-time discipline in the city: Museo Frida Kahlo timed tickets sell out 2–3 weeks ahead.
Altitude is the real physical tax: the colonies sit above 10,000 ft and the final climb at El Rosario is steep. Hire the horses at the gate without shame, keep the Mexico City first day slow (it is already at 7,350 ft), and hydrate like it is a job.
Inventory and driving: the good beds are tiny — Hotel Rodavento, Hotel Don Bruno, and Rancho San Cayetano book out 4–6 months ahead for peak February. If self-driving in Michoacán, stay on the toll autopistas and drive in daylight only; a driver-guide removes the variable entirely.

With a small one (●●● made for little ones): A 2.5-hour nonstop from Austin, zero jet lag, and toddlers can ride horseback (or in a carrier) up to the colonies — the only catches are the 10,000-ft altitude, which needs one slow acclimatization day, and keeping a small voice quiet inside the sanctuary.
