Kyoto
Kansai, Honshu
Japan's old capital, where the calendar is everything — cherry blossom in early April, fiery temple foliage in late November, and hushed snow-dusted shrines in the January low season.

Peak
Early April (sakura) and mid-to-late November (foliage); Golden Week (late Apr–early May) is a separate domestic-travel spike
Weather
Four sharp seasons. Jul–Aug hot & humid — air highs ~90–99°F, but the basin pushes the feels-like to ~105–115°F (real heatstroke risk). June = rainy season (~Jun 6–Jul 19, extends into July). January cold, ~48°F highs, occasional snow on temples. Highs 48–99°F. Rain: high in Jun–mid-Jul (tsuyu rainy season).
Getting there & entry
KIX (Kansai / Osaka) — nonstop (West Coast) / 1-stop rest (West-Coast nonstop only — SFO (United), LAX (JAL), Honolulu (JAL/Alaska); rest of US connects. Alt: Tokyo (NRT/HND) + 2h15 shinkansen (~$95pp, plus 60–90 min to reach Tokyo Station).)
Transfer: ~75 min by Haruka express / bus from KIX · ~$20–30
Entry (US): visa-free 90 days
Weak yen = strong on-the-ground value; the flight ($1,100–1,800) is the big cost, so all-in it's pricier than the $$ ground band suggests
