This is the near window — November 2026 is four months out and it's the single best award month of the Japan year: ANA and United space from Austin (via SFO/LAX/IAH) opens generously in late November, bookable with Chase UR through Air Canada or United. The yen remains historically weak, and koyo delivers sakura-grade drama at a fraction of the spring crowds. Miss it and the next equivalent window is April 2027 with triple the tourists.

Tokyo · 3 nights

nights 1–3

Classic-grand or apartment-style, steps from the shinkansen tracks so departure day is painless: The Tokyo Station Hotel inside the 1914 red-brick station, or MIMARU Tokyo Station East for kitchenette suites if you're traveling with a toddler.

Kanazawa · 2 nights

nights 4–5

A tiny historic ryokan or a modern points play: Asadaya, a five-room inn trading since 1867 near Omicho Market, or the Hyatt Centric Kanazawa attached to the station (a cheap World of Hyatt redemption).

Takayama · 2 nights

This is the splurge: a dinner-inclusive onsen ryokan. Wanosato is a 160-year-old thatched farmhouse on the river ten minutes out of town; Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan puts you a block from the morning market.

Kyoto · 3 nights

Points-splurge or machiya: Park Hyatt Kyoto on the Higashiyama hillside (bookable with Chase UR via World of Hyatt, 35–45k points against $1,500+ cash nights), or a restored two-story townhouse from Maana Homes.

Straight talk

Late November is Kyoto's single busiest fortnight: Tofuku-ji and Eikan-do run hour-long lines by 10am — be at the gates for opening, and buy Eikan-do's timed night-illumination tickets that same morning.
Dinner-inclusive ryokan like Wanosato release only a handful of late-November rooms and sell out 4–6 months ahead — book by July–August and confirm the kaiseki plan (and any dietary limits) at reservation, not on arrival.
Reserved seats on the Nohi Bus to Shirakawa-go sell out days ahead in koyo season, and the village can take its first snow by late November — book online in advance and pack shoes with grip.
Big suitcases fight you on the Alps leg: forward them Tokyo-to-Kyoto with Yamato Transport's takkyubin service (about ¥2,500 per bag, arrives in 2 days) and travel Kanazawa–Takayama with overnight bags only; oversized luggage on the Tokaido Shinkansen also legally requires a reserved oversized-baggage seat.

With a small one (●●○ doable with a little one): Japan is the easiest far-flung country on earth with a toddler — spotless, safe, and the trains are nap machines — but koyo-season temple crowds and stone staircases mean a carrier beats a stroller most days.
