Alpine valley climate. Jul–Aug valley daytime HIGHS ~75–77°F/24–25°C (Lauterbrunnen July high ~77°F) with frequent afternoon thunderstorms; January valley highs ~37°F/3°C. Mountain weather turns fast, and Jungfraujoch (3,454 m) holds snow year-round. Summers are the wettest season (~130 mm in July). Highs 37–77°F. Rain: moderate–high in summer (afternoon storms); mountain weather changes quickly.

Getting there & entry

ZRH (Zurich) or GVA (Geneva) + train — nonstop to Zurich/Geneva (broad) — no airport near Interlaken (Broad US nonstop service to the gateways — SWISS/Delta/United/American to Zurich (JFK, EWR, ORD, ATL, MIA, BOS, LAX, SFO, IAD) and SWISS/United/Delta to Geneva (JFK, EWR, IAD, ATL, seasonal). There is no US flight near Interlaken itself — you train in.)

Transfer: ~2h05–2h20 from Zurich Airport; ~2h45–3h from Geneva Airport by direct/one-change Swiss rail to Interlaken Ost (scenic, punctual, half-hourly) · ~CHF 60–70 2nd class each way (or covered by a Swiss Travel Pass)

Entry (US): Switzerland is in the Schengen area (not the EU) — visa-free 90 days; ETIAS travel authorization expected ~late 2026 / mandatory 2027 (biometric EES entry now phasing in)

Snow: Good at altitude — the Jungfrau ski areas (Grindelwald–Wengen, Mürren–Schilthorn) are snow-reliable Dec–March up high, with the Jungfraujoch glacier world year-round; but the region is globally better known for summer hiking than skiing, and low-elevation valley snow is less dependable early/late.

Interlaken and the Lauterbrunnen valley floor are flat and walkable; car-free hillside villages (Wengen, Mürren) are reached by cog railway or cable car; an exceptional rail/cable-car network reaches high viewpoints without hiking · stroller/wheelchair: valley floors, trains and many lifts are manageable; high trails are not

tap water: safe — plus countless drinkable mountain fountains · altitude risk: low at the valley bases (~1,870 ft Interlaken / ~2,600 ft Lauterbrunnen); Jungfraujoch at 3,454 m / 11,332 ft can cause mild altitude symptoms (breathlessness, headache) because the train ascends fast — take it easy up top · uv heat: high UV at altitude and on snow (burns fast); valley summers are mild · water safety: cold alpine lakes (Thun/Brienz); glacial rivers run fast and frigid
