Volcano-view lodge with hot springs on property — Nayara Tented Camp if this is the splurge leg (private plunge pools facing the cone), or Arenal Observatory Lodge for the single best cone view in the valley at a third of the price.

Peninsula Papagayo · 4 nights

Big beach resort on Culebra Bay's protected water — the Andaz Costa Rica Resort at Peninsula Papagayo is the Hyatt-points play (kids' club, two calm beaches, treehouse architecture), while Casa Conde Beach Front Hotel sits directly on Playa Panamá's flat sand at a fraction of the rate.

The treasury

$6,500–10,000 for two: open-jaw economy flights from a US hub into SJO / out of LIR ($1,000–1,600 total), a mid-boutique Arenal lodge plus the Andaz at dry-season cash rates ($700–1,000/night), a 4x4 rental with one-way drop fee, meals, and tours. Paying the Papagayo leg with points pulls the trip toward $4,500; upgrading to Nayara Tented Camp plus the Four Seasons pushes it past $16,000.

Straight talk

The two 3–3.5-hour drives are real, and the Lake Arenal stretch of Route 142 is relentlessly winding with no shoulders — schedule both drives across nap time and never drive rural Costa Rica after dark.
The SJO-pickup / LIR-drop one-way rental usually carries a $50–150 drop fee on top of mandatory local insurance that quote engines hide; compare against chaining Interbus shuttles plus local taxis before committing to the car.
Peninsula Papagayo is beautiful but isolated: dinner beyond the resort means a 25–35-minute drive to Ginger in Playa Hermosa or the sodas of Playas del Coco, and on-property plates run $30–60. Budget for it or plan the drive.
In the February–March sweet spot, book Mistico Arenal Hanging Bridges Park timed entries and Tabacón day passes 2–4 weeks ahead — and steer clear of Semana Santa week entirely, when domestic travel peaks and prices roughly double.

With a small one (●●○ doable with a little one): Bring the carrier, not the pram — jungle paths and beach sand ignore wheels, and the two three-hour drives are real; but they bracket nap time neatly, and everything in between is pool, sloths and fruit.
