Alpine valley — mild green summers (Jul–Aug valley highs ~69–75°F with afternoon storms), cold snowy winters (Jan valley highs ~30–37°F). Dramatic vertical: the valley town sits at ~3,400 ft but the Aiguille du Midi tops out at ~12,600 ft, far colder & snowier year-round. Highs 34–72°F. Rain: moderate; ~94mm/month, frequent summer afternoon thunderstorms.

Getting there & entry

GVA (Geneva, Switzerland) — Chamonix's real gateway, ~1h15 away and in a different country — nonstop (NYC only) (Narrow — essentially only New York has US nonstop to Geneva (SWISS JFK–GVA year-round ~7h50; United EWR–GVA seasonal summer). Everyone else connects via a European hub (Zurich, Paris CDG, Frankfurt, London, Munich). Note you land in Switzerland, then transfer into France.)

Entry (US): Schengen 90-day visa-free (passport valid ≥3 months beyond departure); ETIAS expected ~late 2026 with a grace period — verify near travel. You land in Switzerland (Schengen, not EU) and drive into France

European lift passes are cheaper than comparable US mega-resorts, but Chamonix lodging/dining skew mid-to-high and Feb/Christmas weeks jump to $$$ (sleeps-8 chalets run into the thousands €/week at peak). NYC nonstop RT ~$700–1,200; rest-of-US connects and costs more.

Snow: Mixed by altitude — high Grands Montets (to ~10,800 ft) is snow-sure and skis into early May; the lower valley areas (Brévent base, Les Houches) are less reliable. The legendary off-piste (Vallée Blanche glacier descent) is guide-only, serious avalanche/crevasse terrain — not casual skiing.

Chamonix town is compact & walkable with a pedestrian centre; the free valley bus + Mont-Blanc Express train (with the guest card/lift pass) link the SEPARATE ski areas & villages — you rely on them because the areas aren't lift-linked · stroller/wheelchair: town manageable but alpine (steep/uneven streets); high cable-car stations are not wheelchair-friendly

tap water: safe · altitude risk: town is fine (~3,400 ft), but the Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs to ~12,600 ft in ~20 min — unacclimatised tourists riding up regularly get altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, breathlessness); take it slow up top · uv heat: high at altitude & on snow/glacier — sunglasses + high-SPF essential · water safety: rivers/glacial melt are frigid & fast — not for swimming
